1) The Exorcist (1973): The brilliance of this film lies not necessarily in the fact that it involves possession and Satan, but in the helplessness of a parent unable to help their child.

2) Eraserhead (1977): The stuff of nightmares. The use of silence and that damned infant puts Rosemary’s baby to shame.

3) Halloween (1978): The birth of the slasher genre began with John Carpenter’s classic. And what sets it apart from the countless others is that it relies primarily on suspense as opposed to sensationalism.

4) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): This film doesn’t have much in the way of gore, but the relentless suspense as Leatherface chases his victims is exhausting and exhilarating all at once.

5) Night of the Living Dead (1968): Ahead of its time on so many levels, it utilized a very small budget to make not only a terrifyingly bleak film with an equal ending, it managed to make a social statement on race relations in America.

Buying a Hannah Montana costume is not really necessary. If you would like to save some money, you can make your own pretty easily.

Start with the wig. You can go for blonde or brunette here and highlights would be good but the key is it must have bangs. Then raid your closet or hit a thrift store and try to find anything with lots of sequins. A shirt covered in sequins or rhinestones with a denim or velvet short cropped jacket over it is perfect. Throw in a pair of jeans and a wide glittery belt and all you need is accessories. Big, wide bangle type bracelets or any other type of big jewelry or a scarf will complete the outfit. You could add a microphone or wireless headset to really pull off the look.

1) Look at pumpkins that are firm and very fresh; bruised and cut pumpkins are no good. The size of the pumpkin is important too, since you’ll want enough space to carve your design.

2) Time to carve now? Aim the knife toward the stem as you cut. That way the lid won’t fall through the hole.

3) If you plan on using stencils for pumpkin design, tape the stencil to the pumpkin. Piercing tools can trace the design and leave slight perforations. This will enable smoother pumpkin carving.

4) Keeping the pumpkin hydrated is key. Wrapping it in plastic and refrigerating it nightly will slow the aging process.

5) Sprinkle nutmeg or cinnamon underneath the pumpkins when they’re lit. You’ll get a nice scent.

6) And lastly, to seal in moisture, petroleum jelly on the sliced edges and on the inside of the pumpkin will go a long way.

Naturally the settlers stole the idea of pumpkin eating from the Native Americans, who had made it a tradition in their culture for many years before Colonial arrival.

Yet you may be even more shocked to learn that pumpkins go back further than the Colonial era—much farther in fact. Try 2,000 years, when the Celts ruled Ireland. These folks celebrated what was then known as All Hallows Eve, when the dead were celebrated by carving out gourds and placing candles in the scooped out vegetables, in an effort to ward off the dead. They even celebrated it on October 31st.

The tradition changed, of course, when European settlers arrived on our shores and realized that pumpkins were simpler to carve out than the traditional gourd from their ancestors.

The legend of the jack o’ lantern begins in 1837. And while there are several versions of this legend, all of them involve an Irishman named Jack. This Irishman has a bit of a problem: he’s stuck somewhere between heaven and hell; we don’t know why he wasn’t allowed into Heaven but we know he also struck a deal with the devil, so as to keep his soul. Jack wandered the darkness until the devil tossed Jack an ember; Jack promptly placed this ember into a carved gourd.

For all you hostesses out there, the key to any successful Halloween motif for parties obviously centers around where people are most likely to congregate. That’s at the table, of course.

Now you could draw some wonderful ideas from a movie like Beetlejuice, of course, but let’s face it: you don’t have the budget of a major Hollywood film. Plus, you never know who—or what—might show up at your party…

First things first, some smooth modern “trees” can adorn your table, giving it a hip yet oddly spooky look as a centerpiece. Also, keeping your eyes on the clearance area at places like Pier One might find you some nifty orange plates! If you don’t want to shell out for these beauts, you can make your own accent plates by going to the home improvement store and cut some down to the desired size, finishing with some orange paint.

Shiny silver bone hands, put the final touch on a very scary Halloween table. Orange napkins can be procured anywhere, as well as orange soda bottles. Just look for ones that don’t have writing on the cap.

The famous charitable Detroit’s Urban Legends is filled with freaky stuff created by volunteers. Another scary Detroit place is Deadly Intentions which offers 6,500 square feet of bloody hallways, crazy clowns, and prisoners in chains.

Now Michigan also boasts the home of one of the most unique concepts around with the Haunted Farm of Terror. Not just the usual hayride here. The story is the farm was bought by an undertaker that was also a pig farmer. He needed help with the farm so he started using pig parts to conjure up helpers for the farm. Mutant pig farmers…and no one has made this movie yet? In addition, Michigan offers the Haunted Fountains, Night Terrors, The Lab or Haunted Hill Acres that is more family friendly.

For the past three years, after being asked to created a haunted hall at a University, she has been busy creating these awesome masks out of spray foam. Georgette Gaynor was making wedding decorations for a living when the University asked her to help them. While she was working on the haunted hall, she discovered spray foam that swells to three times its normal size that is used for insulating cracks around windows and doors.

Since then she has made over fifty large monster masks that she will exhibit as a fundraiser to collect nonperishable food items for a local food bank. The monsters have been used in the past for school fundraisers and special events. The monsters are very time consuming to make with the stages of hardening of the foam. Gaynor takes a lot of time to name them and even goes so far as to sometimes dress the monster if she feels it is necessary.

Many of these locations, will include with the haunted house, a detailed story describing the original haunting of the home and how it has manifested since the haunting came about.

Many of these houses are very old and tend to look rather scary at night on their own and by adding a few decorations and scary looking people, it is quite easy to believe that the homes are actually haunted. Some of these haunted houses have added other attractions to make it a whole evening of fun with the actual haunted house, haunted trails around the property, haunted cemeteries and hayrides filled with spooks that jump out at you. Many even include an area for the faint of heart to sit out the actual hauntings but watch them on a big screen television.

Surprisingly (or not so surprisingly, depending on how often you catch tabloid headlines) Winehouse wigs are selling like crazy on eBay, which is why you may have to use a little ingenuity in getting that perfect look this Halloween. Put down that tequila and stop smoking for a second, you wannabe, because I’m going to show you how to create the perfect Winehouse costume:

1. A black wig with a very tall beehive. Decorate with a colored bandanna or scarf or a wig with a big red flower.

2. Naturally you’re going to need some extraordinarily tacky jewelry, such as some chains around the neck or gigantic hoop earrings.

3. Don’t forget cut off jeans or a tight mini dress with a wide belt. Are you getting cold feet yet?

4. Have a friend draw some tattoos on you. One of ‘em should say ‘Blake’ and be a pocket tattoo smack dab on the chest.

5. And last, but certainly not least: eyeliner! But you knew that.

Oh, and keep drinking at those Halloween parties. You want to be believable, after all!
