Being An Armchair Ghost Hunter

Monday, September 21st, 2009

hunt ghostsDo you love ghosts? Maybe you are fascinated by all of the horror movies out there. A lot of people are. And, the supernatural world is extraordinarily interesting to think about, research, investigate, etc. In fact, there are actually several ghost hunters out there seeking to capture the latest experiences with the supernatural. Do you want to be the next? Guess what? Ghost hunting in today’s world is possible from the comfort of your own home. You can actually sit and hunt for ghosts using your own computer and the modern technology that the internet provides.

Here’s a great idea. There are specified areas that are designated as being haunted. Instead of consistently visiting the location in search of these ghosts, set up a webcam at the location instead. Then, check on the location periodically from your computer to see if any unusual events have happened. It is a great idea, especially since even if you could hunt the area in person; and, you obviously could not be there all the time.

Also, since you are going to need a webcam for the location, make sure to purchase one that will capture the area’s activities properly. There are certain cameras that are better than others, so do your research.

Ghostly Testimony Dooms Greenbriar Murderer

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

greenbriar murdererThere is a town in Greenbrier Country, West Virginia that has a legendary ghost story. It dates back more than 100 years ago and centers around one of the town’s residents, Elva Zona Heaster. Zona had recently, and to the dislike of her parents, married a man by the name of Shue. One day, Zona’s body was found dead in her house.

Mary Jane Heaster, Zona’s mother thought there was something odd about the death. And, although no evidence could be found to suggest any out of the ordinary Mary Jane would not let it could. Legend states that she prayed to God and Zona’s spirit appeared to her and recounted what happened. Her husband Shue had viciously murdered Zona.

After some convincing, Mary Jane convinced authorities to reopen Zona’s casket and have the body reexamined. They did an investigation to see if Mary Jane’s ghost story matched up with the new autopsy. And, guess what? It did! They were able to convict the murderer.

Mary Jane’s story is a legend in the ghost community and it was definitely instrumental in finalizing the details of the case. Without her information, the case may still be a mystery today. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, you would have to admit that Mary Jane and Zona’s story is fascinating!

The Original Ghost Hunter

ghost hunterThroughout history, many people have been known to hunt and seek out the supernatural. This quest provides many with adventure and excitement that is unmatched by other pursuits. The world of ghost hunting is full of renowned hunters who are known for their findings. However, one ghost hunter in particular is undoubtedly the most famous. His name is Harry Price.

Harry Price spent his career as a salesman, journalist, and researcher. He was born and lived in London. His interest in the supernatural began at an early age (some estimate 8 years old). He was particularly fascinated with magic and loved to watch magicians performed and began collecting many books on magic. When Price was 15, him and a group of friends spent the night in a house that was said to be haunted. That experience sparked Price’s further involvement with spirits and ghosts.

After college, Price became apart of the Society for Psychical Research. As apart of the society he was credited for his success as a ghost hunter. Much of his work is seen in photographs taken by William Hope. Price pursued many of his ambitions throughout his career and lived a fascinating life. You can read about many of his stories today.

What’s At The Root of Vampire Legends?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

vampire legendsWhether or not real vampires truly exist and what is the exact nature of their behavior and habits remains a question that may never be answered. Stories abound concerning people who cannot come out in the daylight, who drink the blood of their unsuspecting victims, and who can only be killed by a silver stake through their heart. The line is somewhat blurred between what may be real and what may be legend, but there are a few elements that lend fuel to the vampire fire.

An ailment known as “porphyria” could be one contributing factor to vampire myth. This disease causes the afflicted to have vastly insufficient heme, the iron-rich pigment in the blood. This deficiency causes the afflicted to appear unduly pale and renders them extremely sensitive to sunlight, to the point that even mild sun exposure causes severe burns. The gums and lips may become an unusually deep red color, lending to the pale-skinned, crimson-lipped visage depicted in vampire movies. It is possible that before modern medicine, a remedy for the condition could have been considered to be drinking blood in order to replace the blood in which the afflicted was obviously deficient. All of these elements taken together could very well paint a picture of someone rising at night to drink the blood of innocent victims, and the story became embellished from that point to include the various details we now associate with vampire stories.

Or…they are real and we just don’t know it.

Is Alcatraz Prison Haunted?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

prison alcatrazGhost stories are a favorite pastime around dancing campfires and on dark stormy nights, but the ghost stories surrounding the prison on Alcatraz Island may exceed them all in pure realistic possibility. Many people have seen shady apparitions or fuzzy shadows where they don’t belong, but the events at Alcatraz have drawn attention from those interested in paranormal activities for decades.

Al Capone, one of the most infamous residents of Alcatraz, played the banjo in the prison band and was given permission to practice in the shower room due to security concerns if he were exposed to other inmates. Sounds of banjo music have been reported to be heard emanating from the area of the shower room, even though the prison is now unoccupied and no explanation for the sound can be found. Is it the ghost of Al Capone?

The utility corridor and Cell 41D are two other portions of the prison where frequent paranormal activities have been reported, including sounds of moaning, crying, scuffling, and general conversation sounding like men talking. The utility corridor is the area where three men were shot to death during an attempted escape, and Cell 14D was a part of “the hole”, or solitary confinement where men were sent for punishment. Are these sounds the ghosts of these men occupying the prison to this day, wandering the prison that once held them prisoner? No one knows for certain, but the sheer numbers of reports of ghostly activity are impossible to ignore.

Tortured By The Bell Witch

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

bell witchThe Bell Witch of Robertson County, Tennessee has been blamed for the terrorizing, harassing and even the death of John Bell. The ghost is reported to be the spirit of Kate Batts, a local woman who was a neighbor of John Bell and with whom he had more than one sour business deal. Her apparition began appearing at the home of John Bell and making eerie noises, frightening laughter and wreaking a general degree of mayhem around the house and property. Residents of the surrounding county soon heard of the chaos occurring at the Bell home and Kate Batt’s ghost became widely known and referred to simply as “Kate”. At one point the stories about Kate’s antics became so well known that General Andrew Jackson himself paid a visit to the property and witnessed the destruction caused by the raucous exploits of the ghost.

Following John Bell’s death, apparently from ingesting a poison found near his bedside, Kate persisted in her antics and caused ongoing trauma to the Bell home and the surrounding neighborhood. Even after she seemed to have left the area, no one knew if she really had gone or was just waiting to create more havoc. For that matter, was the ghost even real or was she a person trying to cause trouble under the guise of a spirit? While to this day no one knows for sure, the story of the Bell Witch continues to make people wonder if she will at some point return.

Scientists Discover Early “Vampire” Remains

Monday, August 10th, 2009

vampire remainsWhether the material of horror films or scary stories told around campfires, vampires are the thing of legend and folklore as well as history and science. The true existence of vampires, those who survive by drinking the blood of their human victims, has been debated and researched for hundreds of years, but the fact remains that the stories continue and are now bolstered by interesting discoveries adding credibility to the possibility that vampires do in fact exist.

Matteo Borrini of the university if Florence and Peer Moore-Jansen of Wichita State University both now claim to have discovered the earliest legitimate remains of someone possibly believed to be a vampire. In both cases, skeletal remains of an individual were found with a brick placed in the mouth of the deceased at burial, a practice undertaken supposedly to prevent the dead from chewing on their own burial shroud. It is normal for blood to be expelled from the mouth of a non-embalmed deceased person, so the phenomenon of blood in the mouth and on the burial shroud of a corpse is easily explained, but to the gravediggers of the 1500’s it was not a chance worth taking.

What these new discoveries mean scientifically is unclear, but what is clear is that the person who buried the deceased believed they may have been vampires. That belief itself is enough to cause speculation and spurred research into the true existence of vampires both in the past as well as in modern day.

Capturing Spirit Orbs on Film

Monday, May 18th, 2009

michibeck1There is this director in Los Angeles who recently held a screen testing for his new thriller movie about ghosts in caves. The movie was not completed and it could be altered to make it better. After the testing ended, a long question and answer session happened with the director about the movie. In particular, it was a big debate whether or not the ghosts, spirits, or orbs should be shown on screen in picture or just sound. Some people wondered if showing the orbs on screen would make the movie seem less believable. It might have been helpful for the director of this movie to talk with a ghost hunter, someone who is familiar with the natural spirits and anomalies in the environment.

If you research ghosts, you do a lot more than taking a few pictures to capture an orb hoping that it might be a spirit. A good way to start is to take pictures of all the uncommon things you might find in the environment. There are things like dust, pollen, spores, and rain droplets that are all anomalies in environment. You can compare these pictures to see if you find anything unique. Not all orbs are ghostly. The belief is ghostly orbs contain spirits in them. Sometimes an orb even contains more than one soul. Now that you know a little bit more about orbs, you can start taking pictures.

Looking for a Supernatural Experience?

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

supernaturalIf you are looking for some ghosts on Halloween this year, there are some great movies that could get ready and in the spirit of the holiday.

You must begin with one of the best all time movies ever, The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis playing a child psychologist who is haunted by memories of failing one of his former patients. While you may spend half of the movie wondering what you are missing, the film’s shocking conclusion will answer all your questions.

Speaking of Poltergeists, the movie Poltergeist has to be considered one of the best and scariest supernatural movies. Director Steven Spielberg and the fascinating special effects that are mastered in this film make it one that could keep you up for a few nights.

For some truly scary ghosts, don’t miss out on the little red eyes in the windows of The Amityville Horror which was based on a true story.

Another scary, supernatural flick that is supposedly, loosely based on actual events is The Entity. You can go wrong this Halloween with a woman being tormented by a demon.

If you are looking for a ghost movie to share with someone not interested in being scared you can always fire up your cable television and find the movie Ghost or Always that are actually love stories that involve a ghost or two.
