Stay In With a Scary Movie This Halloween

Friday, October 31st, 2008

What gives a horror film legendary status? It seems that the film must sustain terror in its audiences over generations, as we become increasingly desensitized, as the bar must be raised higher and higher each decade. Here are some films that passed this test:

1) The Exorcist (1973): The brilliance of this film lies not necessarily in the fact that it involves possession and Satan, but in the helplessness of a parent unable to help their child.

2) Eraserhead (1977): The stuff of nightmares. The use of silence and that damned infant puts Rosemary’s baby to shame.

3) Halloween (1978): The birth of the slasher genre began with John Carpenter’s classic. And what sets it apart from the countless others is that it relies primarily on suspense as opposed to sensationalism.

4) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): This film doesn’t have much in the way of gore, but the relentless suspense as Leatherface chases his victims is exhausting and exhilarating all at once.

5) Night of the Living Dead (1968): Ahead of its time on so many levels, it utilized a very small budget to make not only a terrifyingly bleak film with an equal ending, it managed to make a social statement on race relations in America.

zombie
Although movie remakes usually tend to not end up on the same scale as originals, the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead tops most lists of best zombie flicks ever. Die hard zombie fans will tell you that this modern version of zombies is the ultimate zombie movie ever made.

Powerful acting skills make Night of the Living Dead rank right up there with the best of the best as far as zombie movies go too.

Shaun of the Dead is in addition to being one of the best zombie movies it also throws in some humor and romance along the way.

The 1979 Italian movie Zombi 2 is a classic that covers every aspect you could look for in a zombie movie.

Another comedy slash zombie movie, Dead Alive, that came out in 1992 offers a cheesier version of the zombie flick if that is possible.

The British epic 28 Days Later incorporated digital effects to make this zombie flick a modern winner.

Alien slugs on the brain controlling the zombies in Night of the Creeps made this a fun addition to the list.

5 Scariest Movies of All Time

movies

Scary movies conjure up all sorts of intense emotions which may be the reason so many people flock to see them. Fright and disgust pour out of the movie theaters and back into the world that may not seem like such a scary place after watching the horror on the screen for a couple of hours. Many people still remember what is still considered one of the scariest movies ever made, Psycho. Hitchcock’s complex thriller is known for having one of the best scripts ever with and amazing mid point plot twist.

Alien reigns in as one of the scariest movies of all time with little dialog and lots of action as the demonic little creature is hunted and killed.

Of course, who could forget the freakiness that Jack Nicholson was able to pull off when portraying Jack Torrence from Stephen King’s original novel, The Shining that still terrifies new viewers to this day.

One of James Cameron’s finest achievements may be the sequel to Alien called Aliens that, is again filled with great action and an interesting plotline.

Rounding out the list is Jaws. Many of us are still afraid to swim open water, thanks to this cinematic gem.

Costume Parties: Halloween’s Not Just for Kids

Halloween Costume PartyJust because you are not a little kid doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Halloween. You do not have to go trick or treating or even go to haunted houses if you are not up to it. You can always throw a costume party to celebrate the occasion.

A costume party is a great way to allow yourself to be creative and enjoy Halloween’s most appealing aspect, which is to be someone else for the day and set your inhibitions free for a couple of hours. Well, my first costume party was quite fun. The theme was “Imaginary and Mystical Creatures.”

The party had a contest for the most creative costume. I decided to dress up myself as “The Queen of the Damned” a vampire queen.  I had on fake fangs and blood on the corner of my mouth which ran down my cheek. My face was as pale as I could make it along with dark and shadowy facial makeup. I had on a jet black wig with the hair in a tight bun on the top. I was also wearing a deep dark crimson color dress it was fitted at the top and it formed to my body all the way to my waist then it begins to flow losely. The costumes at the party were very creative and everyone looked horrifing.

The party area was well decorated with candles to light the room with numerous props such as a witch’s caldron with the fog rising from it rapidly. There was howling and other typical halloweeen noises being played along with great party mixes. The food was named in accordance to it’s appearance, with spagetti molded into the shape of a brain and other disgusting looking (but tasty) food.

In one room, there were clips of scary movies playing such as “Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Jason”, and many more classic horror films. The night continued until sunrise when the guests began to disperse. My adventure at my first costume party had came to an end.
