Grease is the Word This Halloween

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

The 50’s aren’t even a memory of most people who dress up for Halloween anymore but thanks to the popularity of the movie Grease, people still think about that decade fondly, even if they weren’t there. If you want to dress up like a Grease character for Halloween, it’s not that difficult to do.

Sandy’s costume can be made quite easily from:

A white short sleeve blouse
Pale yellow waistcoat
A long flared yellow skirt (use a crinoline to make it puffy)
White socks
White tennis shoes
Ponytail style blonde wig
Mascara, pale pink lipstick

If you want to dress like Danny, here’s what you’ll need:

A black jacket
A black t-shirt
Black pants
White socks
Black shoes
A 1950s-style black wig
Black sunglasses

Easy! You’ll look like you came straight out of the 50s in no time, and for very little money.

Carnival Costumes are Both Fun and Easy!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

carnivalThe Notting Hill Carnival is a huge event with hundreds of participants that spend months working on costumes to go with the music and dance of the day. The show offers everything from small groups to international teams the perform all over throughout the year. Bands at Carnival must have at least 30 people in costume. The team will focus on a theme that they will base their performance on.

Today Carnival has grown to become a phenomenon, with elaborate costumes. In 2006 two million people converged on the streets of Notting Hill to watch what has become the biggest Mas in Europe, second only in the world to Rio.

Making carnival costumes for Halloween doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. By using what you already have in your closet and finding things at thrift stores you can easily put together a costume to imitate carnival costumes.

Most importantly, look for flowing, bright skirts matched with anything from a bikini top to a long flowing tunic depending on your comfort level. Use your imagination and add as many accessories like belts, jewelry, hairpieces and anything else you feel will add to the outfit until you have a completed look.

Be the Captain of Your Halloween Party

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

captainCaptain Jack Sparrow is definitely a favorite among the fictional characters that kids and adults alike are trying to portray this Halloween.

While you may find it fairly easy to find a pirates costume to wear for Halloween it may not convey the actual Captain Sparrow look you are going for.

It might be a good start though. If you begin with a regular pirates costume of black or gray tight fitting pants that go to your calves and a white flowing shirt, you will have a great start. Add a long, fitted vest with buttons, a bandana and tall boots.

If you really want to look authentic you must pay attention to the hair and makeup. You will need lots of bronzer to make sure you are looking very tan and add some black eyeliner to complete the look.

If you don’t have long hair or want to go with the dreadlocks look you may need a wig for that part. Essential for the look is the mustache and the braided beard with two beads on the bottom of each braid. Add any other accessories you can find like belts, sashes and swords.

Oh Mama Mia!

abbaAbba has been a longtime favorite band of many and so it is no surprise that they are a Halloween costume favorite.

Since the seventies, people have tried to come up with costumes to portray this band, which means that while the costumes are available online they tend to be fairly pricey to purchase.

You need the satin pants and flowing tops with ruffles and high collars which aren’t exactly considered high fashion today; so to order the costumes it can run upwards of $300.

Not many people are willing to spend that much on their Halloween costume so the best alternative is to start early finding your costume. Go searching all your local thrift stores and consignment shops and try to find satin pants. Any kind of glitzy flowing shirt that reminds you of your disco days will work.

One key part of the costume, especially if you are going with friends and trying to make the whole band, look for the appropriate wigs for each band member.

Why Should the Kids Have All the Fun?

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

supermanYou might be too old for trick-or-treating but there are no age limits when comes to Halloween costumes. Some adults get more creative with their costumes than they did as kids. There are a variety of ideas to keep in mind from sexy and innocent to professional and fairytale themes.

If sexy is your style you might consider a French maid or modern vampire. This could also be something as simple as dressing up as your favorite actress. A few ideas for the guys include military attire, political figures or superheroes. Most adult costume ideas are based on childhood heroes or real people we admired while growing up.

A great place to find Halloween costume accessories is a flea market or garage sale. Find an old dress that makes you look like a medieval maiden or mix and match to come up with something totally ridiculous. There is nothing like designing your own costume as it puts you in complete control.

Halloween is a great time for the kids but adults don’t have to miss out on the fun. If anything you can come up with something unique and receive compliments while accompanying the children on their candy collecting mission.
