Be the Captain of Your Halloween Party

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

captainCaptain Jack Sparrow is definitely a favorite among the fictional characters that kids and adults alike are trying to portray this Halloween.

While you may find it fairly easy to find a pirates costume to wear for Halloween it may not convey the actual Captain Sparrow look you are going for.

It might be a good start though. If you begin with a regular pirates costume of black or gray tight fitting pants that go to your calves and a white flowing shirt, you will have a great start. Add a long, fitted vest with buttons, a bandana and tall boots.

If you really want to look authentic you must pay attention to the hair and makeup. You will need lots of bronzer to make sure you are looking very tan and add some black eyeliner to complete the look.

If you don’t have long hair or want to go with the dreadlocks look you may need a wig for that part. Essential for the look is the mustache and the braided beard with two beads on the bottom of each braid. Add any other accessories you can find like belts, sashes and swords.

Taking a Trip to Whoville This Halloween?

whoville…More Dr. Seuss Costumes…

Even with the surge in popularity of Whoville and Dr. Seuss with the movie “Horton Hears a Who”, costumes of the beloved Whoville characters are not the easiest to find.

Cindy Lou Who, a favorite of little girls everywhere is amongst the most difficult to find. Other popular costume requests are the Mayor of Whoville, his wife, Mama Who, Grandma and Grandpa, Boo Who and Danny Who. Of course, there is always the Grinch, who is a classic.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to find any of these costumes other than the Grinch. If you do come across these popular costumes, it would be very costly to purchase or even rent them so many are trying their hand at making their own costumes. Use images from the movie to start.

Remember that everything is very bright and big like big polka dots and big hair and hats. A trip to your local thrift stores or consignment shops is probably the best way to come up with some of the exaggerated looks that one would find in Whoville.

Why Should the Kids Have All the Fun?

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

supermanYou might be too old for trick-or-treating but there are no age limits when comes to Halloween costumes. Some adults get more creative with their costumes than they did as kids. There are a variety of ideas to keep in mind from sexy and innocent to professional and fairytale themes.

If sexy is your style you might consider a French maid or modern vampire. This could also be something as simple as dressing up as your favorite actress. A few ideas for the guys include military attire, political figures or superheroes. Most adult costume ideas are based on childhood heroes or real people we admired while growing up.

A great place to find Halloween costume accessories is a flea market or garage sale. Find an old dress that makes you look like a medieval maiden or mix and match to come up with something totally ridiculous. There is nothing like designing your own costume as it puts you in complete control.

Halloween is a great time for the kids but adults don’t have to miss out on the fun. If anything you can come up with something unique and receive compliments while accompanying the children on their candy collecting mission.

Procrastinate? Here Are Some Great Last Minute

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

elvisAfter trying to mentally design your Halloween costume for months, the time has arrived and you still have no idea of what to wear. With little time to spare, you need to come up with something quick yet clever.

Here are a few tips for last minute costume designs, many of which can be designed from things you have laying around the house:

- Put on a pink outfit, carry a feather and consider yourself “Tickled Pink”
- Tape a few pieces of candy to your shirt and call yourself a “Sugar Daddy”
- Stuff a cooking pot over your head and admit that you’re a “Pot-head”
- Cut eyes, nose, and mouth holes out of a sheet and go as a “Ghost”
- Wear a huge bra over your shirt, stuff it with spices and show off your “Spice Rack”
- Throw on your mom’s bridal dress, a pair of sneakers and become a “Runaway Bride”
- Put on a suit, staple a few legal documents to it and call yourself a “Lawsuit”
- Walk around with a box of Cheerios and a plastic knife and become the local “Cereal Killer”
- Grab your brother’s toy airplane, keep it in your hand and tell people you’re an “Aircraft Carrier”

Need Costume Ideas for a Group?

scooby doo
The only thing more exciting than creating a Halloween costume for yourself is coming up with themes for a group of friends. With so many options to choose from, this can be more difficult than it sounds. To make things easier we have provided a few themes that will give you some ideas.

Fairytales – Most adults have fond memories of characters from their favorite fairytales. A Disney theme would be a good idea with members of your group dressing up like Snow White, Cinderella, Prince Charming or other characters.

Movies - Stars Wars is certainly a popular choice for group costume themes. Use the Force to guide your friends into the event and flash your trusty lightsaber all over the dance floor.

TV Shows – the options here are endless. Star Trek is perhaps the most logical choice, but your group could also do a Simpsons theme, the loveable Brady Bunch or even the wacky cartoon characters from Family Guy.

Music Bands – music has inspired several costumes. With a few wigs, a bit of jewelry and creative attire, your party could walk in as a legendary band such as Led Zeppelin or a more modern group like Destiny’s Child.

Want To Be More Than Meets The Eye?

transformers

Do you stand for universal equality like Optimus Prime or are you more sinister like Megatron?

Whether it’s good or evil, you can take robotic form by making your own Transformers costume.

Transformers are complex machines but creating a good costume requires minimal materials. A realistic outfit can be crafted with basic materials from you local discount store with black sweat pants, foam camping bed rolls and a bike helmet. You will also need a few tools such as a hot knife and a low temperature hot-glue gun.

To begin, trace the designated Transformer on a sheet of huge butcher paper. The hot knife makes it easy to cut off each piece, assuring that they are well-rounded, while the hot glue gun holds everything into place.

Once all the pieces are cut and glued, use the foam as flanges then tie them around the arms and legs with string or ribbon. To achieve the glossy appearance you can use a polyurethane coating. Lastly, spray paint the costume the color of your choice and use a small paintbrush to add the fine details. With a few creative attachments, your costume can be one that is truly “more than meets the eye”.

Spandex Spiderman Costume

Spiderman Costumes
Most of us remember the Superhero Spiderman. He jumped around sticking on everything like spiders tend to do.

The current costume is a thick dark, deep blue spandex with a nice sheen to it. The web lines are thin, black, and raised slightly.

The mask is made of four pieces, the eyes are fabric, with decent visibility.
There are thin soles on the bottom of the shoes. There’s finally a logo on the back – it’s a little bit more stylized than the original back logo, but that’s ok.

The costume is in two pieces – the body and the mask. The body zips nicely, and hides under a flap between the red and blue of the back of the shoulders.

The Mask Costume

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

jim-carrey-mask.jpgThe Mask originated as a comic book series. It was later adapted into the 1994 film by the same name starring Jim Carrey. The story initially revolves around a magical mask which gives anyone who places it on their face nearly limitless power and an altered appearance, characterized by a large set of teeth and green head. The mask affects the personality of the wearer by removing all social inhibitions. The capabilities of the Mask are entirely dependent upon its wearer.

Once the film became an animated television show, the character was depicted more as a mischievous superhero.

You’ll need a lot of pieces to make this costume. A fedora hat, a zoot suit or swallowtail coat or tuxedo-style pleated pants, tie and a shoe with a Cuban heel. Mostly all in pale yellow, with lots of green makeup and a bald wig.  You can also take the easy way out and purchase a Mask costume.

Aeon Flux Costume

Aeon Flux - Womens sexy costumeThis costume is all about being Goth. It’s perfect for super heroes/super villain party and is based on an outfit from “A Last Time for Everything” from the original Aeon Flux video.

Aeon is a double agent. She’s a confident trickster with her own agenda. The costume doesn’t need to be liquid latex or vinyl. It could be black crushed velvet.

Boots are the key to the allusion of height and length. Even if you are 6 ft. get yourself some platform stilettos. If you go the more revealing costume route, you might want to get a fishnet body suit with full arms and wear gloves and neck choker. And don’t forget a good laser gun.

I haven’t been able to find the actual Aeon Flux costume anywhere, but the best thing I’ve seen so far is the Sexy Queen of Felines costume.  Lose the mask & cat ears, ad a holster for keeping your firepower, and this nylon/spandex catsuit should rock the Aeon Flux look!
