Best Costumes that include Your Children’s Eyes

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Most children want to look good in costumes—be it for Halloween, Christmas or Easter or any holiday where they need a costume but some children have a hard time because they wear glasses. However, there are some great costumes that work well with glasses. There are several ways this can be done and it won’t cost you “an arm or a leg.”

Find a Mask that has Plenty of Room

First, find a Halloween mask that has plenty of room so that it fits easily over eyeglasses. You don’t want the mask to press too hard against your child’s face. An example might be a plastic Green Lantern mask, a full latex Frankenstein head mask or a Harlequin mask. Let your child try them on to see which ones fit the best. You can also make your own if you can’t find any in the stores. With a little imagination, some sewing and some face paint, you can create a unique and great looking mask at home. In the past, many children have put on a paper sack, cut out areas for a smile, eyes and nose, decorated it with different colors and had a great time. This is a cheaper way to go, but just as effective and fun!

Try a Harry Potter or Clark Kent Disguise

Then, there are costumes that work great with masks such as Harry Potter costumes or Austin Power costumes. In addition, there is the famous superhero—Clark Kent/alias Superman. If the superman costume is selected, the child wears a regular outfit along with his glasses and underneath the outfit, has on a Superman t-shirt. And, you can dress up as a pumpkin and no one will notice the glasses; they will be focusing on the pumpkin. Also, you can wear outfits of a construction worker, a fireman, a teacher, a doctor, a farmer or waitress. You could also go dressed as a hippie and wearing glasses with this kind of outfit would fit in like flint!

Need a Last Minute Costume? Think Hannah Montana!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Halloween is here and if you are still in the market for a costume for your teenage girl, Hannah Montana could be the answer. Most teen girls know and love Hannah Montana and costumes can still be found in time for the holiday.

Buying a Hannah Montana costume is not really necessary. If you would like to save some money, you can make your own pretty easily.

Start with the wig. You can go for blonde or brunette here and highlights would be good but the key is it must have bangs. Then raid your closet or hit a thrift store and try to find anything with lots of sequins. A shirt covered in sequins or rhinestones with a denim or velvet short cropped jacket over it is perfect. Throw in a pair of jeans and a wide glittery belt and all you need is accessories. Big, wide bangle type bracelets or any other type of big jewelry or a scarf will complete the outfit. You could add a microphone or wireless headset to really pull off the look.

Costumes Go Hollywood!

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Hollywood is always an influence on Halloween costumes but some years it is more noticeable than others. Costumes are chosen many times based on favorite television and movie characters so it is depends a lot on the big shows and movies that have come out in the previous year.

Of course, this year is going to be a huge Batman year with the huge hit, The Dark Knight recently taking over at the theaters. Many of the old standbys will remain as popular as usual like witches, vampires and aliens.

Other big ones this year influenced by television shows could be Hanna Montana, High School Musical and Camp Rock. Movies like Pirates of the Carribean, Spiderman, Star Wars and the new Iron Man are more movie ideas for those looking for Hollywood influences. Some people may even be looking for the celebrities rather than the characters like Sonny & Cher and Donny & Marie.

Favorite athletes are another big influence that make it very easy, to come up with costumes if you have a jersey from one of your favorites. Add a baseball, football or necessary equipment to make it clear who you are and you are all set.

Making Your Own Halloween Costume

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

What does it take to make your own Halloween costume this year? A little ingenuity and a lot of imagination! Luckily, there is a ton of information out there to help inspire you.

Just about any do-it-yourselfer will tell that the best advice is to start early. Look around your home for ideas and materials. Once you have an idea for a costume, start thinking about how you can incorporate the materials you already have.

A great example for kids is a chicken costume, with a feather boa, a white baseball cap with red felt “comb” and yellow rubber gloves for feet. It’s fast, easy and many of the items can be found around the house.

Another way of looking for great material is on community websites. Besides checking here for used costumes for sale, leggings, wings, and old sports uniforms can be found and swapped or lent by other mothers.

However, if you just don’t have time to make your own costume, there are a number of places to purchase just what you are looking for this Halloween.

Bringing Back the ‘80s…for Halloween

Friday, October 10th, 2008

So for all those ‘80s devotees out there, you may be wondering how to wrangle up an awesome costume for Halloween along with some great party ideas. Look no further. Kick back, pop in some Fear of Music by Talking Heads, and get ready for some Miami Vice coolness.

Why not start with the aforementioned show? An linen jacket, loafers, a two-day beard and of course a pastel shirt and you’ve got a shockingly-accurate Sonny Crockett costume! Or if you want to go the more virtuous route (or just avoid pastels entirely).

Who isn’t a fan of the ’80 tennis star? No sweat—just throw on a headband, painfully-tight shorts and white shirt, a pair of white Adidas sneakers and a wooden racket and you’ve got the sports hero look down!

Stopping in Beverly Hills may bring back memories of one of the best ‘80s films of all time, but it won’t get you an Axel Foley costume. Where to get that Mumford Phys. Ed Department shirt? Try your local thrift store.

While the Madonna look may be slightly overplayed, you can’t go wrong with classic Devo.
Hopefully this helps. Remember, imagination is the only limit and fun the only objective.

Fun Transformers Bumblebee Costume

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Transformers costumes are some of the most difficult, but they are also some of the most requested and the coolest looking when they are all done.

To make the bumblebee costume you’ll need yellow and black material, yellow and black paint, and a motorcycle helmet, as well as cardboard and a pattern. Most of the costume is going to be yellow, and you can find the majority of what you need at thrift stores and retail chain stores, so you won’t have to pay a lot of money for the costume.

The biggest problem with making the costume is it actually requires some skill. You can get patterns in a lot of places to make this costume, and you can find instructions that aren’t that hard to follow. Just remember to take your time and it’ll turn out great.
If you don’t have time to make the costume, there are a ton of sites online that carry it.
Either way, your child is sure to love it.

Cute Kids Costumes!

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

There are so many Halloween costumes out there for kids, and it can be really hard to pick the best one. You want your kid to be cute, but you want him or her to be original, too, and that can be difficult.

With a few easy tricks and a little bit of ingenuity, you can hand make a costume that’s cute and unique. Some of the easiest ones are a baby duck, a spider, or a ketchup and mustard costume that’s the cutest thing for twins. These all involve only some very basic sewing and gluing skills and only require a few items that can be easily purchased at any craft store.

You don’t have to spend a fortune or work for hours on end to come up with a great Halloween costume for your toddler or preschool-aged child. It can be fast, easy, inexpensive and they will look great!

Turn Your Family Into the Addams Family This Halloween

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Who can forget the Addams family? If you want to dress like them this Halloween, you can do it on a budget and still look great.

The wonderful thing about the Addams family is that their clothing was so simple- they dressed in black. Mortia and Wednesday had some lace on their dresses, but not much. Gomez had a black suit. Pugsley wore mostly black, with a black and white striped shirt. Easy as can be.

Don’t forget uncle Fester with a black monk-like robe, bald cap and white face paint.

You won’t have to do much work and you’ll be able to have a great Halloween, whether you’re going to a party, going out with friends to trick or treat, or just staying home and answering the door to pass out candy all night.

Grease is the Word This Halloween

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

The 50’s aren’t even a memory of most people who dress up for Halloween anymore but thanks to the popularity of the movie Grease, people still think about that decade fondly, even if they weren’t there. If you want to dress up like a Grease character for Halloween, it’s not that difficult to do.

Sandy’s costume can be made quite easily from:

A white short sleeve blouse
Pale yellow waistcoat
A long flared yellow skirt (use a crinoline to make it puffy)
White socks
White tennis shoes
Ponytail style blonde wig
Mascara, pale pink lipstick

If you want to dress like Danny, here’s what you’ll need:

A black jacket
A black t-shirt
Black pants
White socks
Black shoes
A 1950s-style black wig
Black sunglasses

Easy! You’ll look like you came straight out of the 50s in no time, and for very little money.
