Is Alcatraz Prison Haunted?
Ghost stories are a favorite pastime around dancing campfires and on dark stormy nights, but the ghost stories surrounding the prison on Alcatraz Island may exceed them all in pure realistic possibility. Many people have seen shady apparitions or fuzzy shadows where they don’t belong, but the events at Alcatraz have drawn attention from those interested in paranormal activities for decades.
Al Capone, one of the most infamous residents of Alcatraz, played the banjo in the prison band and was given permission to practice in the shower room due to security concerns if he were exposed to other inmates. Sounds of banjo music have been reported to be heard emanating from the area of the shower room, even though the prison is now unoccupied and no explanation for the sound can be found. Is it the ghost of Al Capone?
The utility corridor and Cell 41D are two other portions of the prison where frequent paranormal activities have been reported, including sounds of moaning, crying, scuffling, and general conversation sounding like men talking. The utility corridor is the area where three men were shot to death during an attempted escape, and Cell 14D was a part of “the hole”, or solitary confinement where men were sent for punishment. Are these sounds the ghosts of these men occupying the prison to this day, wandering the prison that once held them prisoner? No one knows for certain, but the sheer numbers of reports of ghostly activity are impossible to ignore.
