Medieval costumes range from very basic to extremely elegant and costly. One of the best solutions to the expensive of these types of costumes is to try to find the basics on your own and add in the more authentic accessories your base.
Men can start with some basic long pants tucked into calf high tie up boots and women can use a basic long, flowing dress preferably velvet.
Finding accessories to go with it is not too difficult. You can find a lot of pouches and bags that are reminiscent of that time. Costume jewelry and hair accessories are not too costly either.
If you get creative, you may even be able to find armor and weapons to go along with the time period and enhance the costume, so it is clear what time frame you are trying to duplicate.
If you use your imagination, you should be able to create or buy just the right outfit for your medieval costume.
